The pharmaceutical industry in Bangladesh is one of the most developed technology sectors within Bangladesh. This sector provides 97% of the total medicinal requirement of the local market. The research for biotechnology in Bangladesh started in the late 1970s. The root cause behind the initiation was the significance of agricultural sector, which had been the backbone of the national economy since the ancient times. The research first started in the department of Genetics and Plant Breeding in Bangladesh Agricultural University through Tissue culture on jute. In September 1993, the government of Bangladesh formed a National Committee on Biotechnology Product Development to select potential biotechnological projects which could be leased out for commercialization. In the late 1990s, Bangladesh became a member of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology(ICGEB). In 1999, the National Institute of Biotechnology was established as the center of excellence in biotechnological education. To accelerate multidimensional biotechnological research, in 2006, the government adopted the national policy guidelines on biotechnology which was approved by the National Task force on biotechnology. In 2012, the cabinet approved the draft of National Biotechnology Policy, 2012 which was aimed at eradicating poverty through increasing productivity in agriculture and industrial sectors.
There are 1 Medical University, 13 Govt. Medical College, 25 Private Medical College Hospital, 8 Postgraduate Institute, 2 Institute of Health technology, 3000 Hospitals and Clinics and almost 18000 Diagnostic Centers and Health Centers in all over Bangladesh. The number of this Medical College Hospitals, Diagnostic Center and Health Centres are increasing rapidly.
The total diagnostic market size is 700 million taka on the basis of 2008 sales volume. This data is for both Instrument and Consumables. Among the total market the Instrument is about 350-400 Million Taka and the consumables are of 300-350 Million Taka.

As the demand is increasing due to population growth and establishing of new Hospitals and Diagnostic Centres the no of companies in this field increasing day by day.
